Racing Santander is preparing to return to First Division with a comprehensive renovation of its stadium, El Sardinero, which includes expanding the capacity to 27,000 spectators and an estimated cost of 68 million euros. The club has agreed to analyze the feasibility of a comprehensive reform of the El Sardinero sports fields with the City of Santander. The renovation comes with the team's return to the top division and aims to have a stadium worthy of the elite of Spanish football. The proposal presented by Racing in October includes expanding the capacity to 27,000 spectators, with a maximum estimated cost of 68 million euros. The mayor of Santander, Gema Igual, and the president of Racing, Manuel Higuera, presented this roadmap jointly after the follow-up commission of the current agreement. Both institutions will create a working group to analyze the legal, economic, and technical options for the comprehensive reform. This study will be one of the main lines of the new agreement that will be signed by the City and the club. The agreement will have a duration of four years and a budget of 3.4 million euros. The new agreement could be formalized in August or September. Gema Igual explained that this analysis is an indispensable first step because many of the issues are not a matter of political decision. The objective is to determine if the project is viable and if both parties can assume it to advance. Manuel Higuera was very satisfied: I am truly happy, it is a step that the mayor has taken and I can only show my satisfaction. In parallel to the study of the big reform, improvements will continue to be made in El Sardinero. Higuera has qualified them as necessary patches to maintain the facilities as dignified as possible. Among the immediate actions is the waterproofing of the roof, awarded to the SIEC company. The works will begin at the end of June and will focus on the most damaged area, eliminating leaks in approximately 25% of the stadium. It is expected that this phase will conclude by September 7, without affecting the dispute of matches. In addition, the new agreement will include the improvement of accessibility to the stadium, a work previously planned that could not be completed due to the slow pace in the drafting of the specifications. The chosen formula combines punctual improvements with integral analysis. As the mayor pointed out: We will think about El Sardinero in parts and we will combine it with thinking about El Sardinero in an integral way. Racing Santander returned to the First Division after 14 years away from the top division of Spanish football. It was a very solid campaign in Segunda, where it maintained a good part of the tournament in the leadership positions thanks to an offensive and effective style. This return marks the end of a long period of sporting and institutional difficulties that began after its descent in 2012. During these years, the club went through complicated moments, including stages in Segunda B.
